Claudia Warner worked as the Administrative Manager of the W.M. Keck Foundation Free Electron Laser Center at Vanderbilt University while I was the Director and Principal Investigator of the center. She was always pleasant and looking for ways to inform and help our researchers.
The Keck FEL Center sat at the interface of Arts & Science, Engineering, and Medicine, so we reported to three Deans (and three financial systems). Whenever I needed information, she could provide it accurately within 24 hours, which was not always easy with the multiple organizations involved. She was adept at tracking who was on target with their expenses, and who were over- or under-spending.
Unfortunately, in 2008, the Department of Defense terminated the program that provided the largest share of our funding. Claudia was invaluable in helping shepherd the close-out and transition of staff and trainees to other funded projects in an orderly manner. Even after she had taken another position in the School of Engineering, she continued to help manage some of the on-going activities, and final expense reports to the DOD.
Clients receive the expertise of a senior research administrator without the cost of hiring a full-time grants manager.
